Even filing the base of the replacement antenna didn't solve the fit problem so here's what I did instead:
FIRST: Disconnect the battery negative - the power wiring to the antenna motor is ON otherwise.
1) Removed the entire antenna motor assembly out of the car.
2)_Disconnected the power wiring.
3) Removed the aluminum antenna tube by loosening two small phillips head screws. Be sure to note the orientation of this tube with respect to the motor assembly - mark it with a pen or crayon - better yet, take pictures for reference.
4) Removed the cover where the geared assembly resides (this pulls the antenna down and pushes it up).
5) Removed the inner cover/reel.
6) Pushed the antenna replacement into the aluminum tube
7) Pushed the geared end of the antenna into the motor and out where it coils into the reel. Push it far enough in and through such that the antenna (telescoping section) is entirely down (or within 2 inches) inside the aluminum antenna tube.
8) Now, here's the painful/tricky part. You have to coil up the bottom geared section in concentric circles and stuff this inside the reel (make sure any washers get put back in the right place). Use a screw driver to tuck in any bulging parts. This may take a few tries but be patient and persevere. A helper might help with extra hands.
9) Place the outer cover onto the motor assembly, and replace the nut that holds it on. Again, you have to keep this all pressed together and any parts of the antenna geared section that tries to bulge out. Snug up the nut but don't overtighten it as it may bind up the real and gear drive inside.
10) Now replace the antenna motor assembly back into position, reconnect the power wiring, the drain tube and the antenna coax connection.
11) Replace the outer fender base and cap nut. Do not over-tighten.
12) Reconnect the battery negative connection. And test the radio ON/OFF and antenna operation. It may take a few tries for the telescoping section to go up and down all the way with the radio ON and OFF.
This is the only alternative way I could find to do the installation and it DID work. Otherwise, I would have damaged the antenna tube, the replacement antenna or both.
Good luck - patience is a virtue in this case.
