Man, talk about the quintessentially sloppy job!
8 pairs of nitrile gloves, a few scratches & bruises, half a roll of paper towels, and a gouge in a glasses lens later, it's done.
Along with the axial movement, the old inner driver had about half a mm of lateral slop, measured at the outer end of the cup, when the cup was extended out. That was the source of the intermittent vibration on acceleration.
Had a tube of Permatex #2 handy to seal the threads. I'm going to be smelling that stuff in my dreams.
Speaking of which .... the bearing carrier bolts on transmission that I took the replacement inner driver from were finger tight. It was a CRS rebuild that ran out of oil and cracked its case. It had failed because the bearing carrier and rear cover bolts had all worked themselves loose and let the oil dribble out. No sealer, no loctite .... nuthin'! Very sad. Other than not being able to move, it shifted nicely.
