Most of the kids started with piano, then we all spread out to fill up the holes in the symphonic band......if there were gaps in horns or woodwinds, then the music teacher would be plugging for those positions to be be filled. I don't recall why coronet was the chosen horn, but not long after I started, I ended up with braces, temporarily ending my mouthpiece type instrument playing. Drums and guitars for awhile, and back to horns after the braces were ditched.
Then, came electronics, and massive amplifiers and speaker cabinets. That lead to being a sound tech for local bands. The band I worked for played in front of Little Feat, so the after party was a collection of the three bands and all the other festive groups that sang into the night. "Low" was holding court with Bill Hayward in the upstairs bedroom along with the usual suspects.....long haired hippie chicks, and the supplier du jour putting a smile on faces. Being straight helped get through the night and the weaving through the wreckage yielded all the leftover ladies == there are benefits to keeping your head intact :-) Like I said, there were benefits to staying out of the fast and fastest lane. Now, I just land speed race .... there is only one lane ; FAST
