Pete,
I'll let others address the SRS issue, I mostly stick with the pre-SRS cars in my own fleet. As for the popping out of gear issue, here's the skinny: These C900 five speed transmissions can be persuaded to do that when a hydraulic motor mount collapses or motor mount bracket cracks or in the event of any other problem that allows the engine to settle at other than it's intended position. A problem with the shift linkage can also cause incomplete gear engagement which is frequently the cause of unexpected disengagement. Typical shift linkage areas of concern are the rubber coupling that's just on the engine side of the firewall, above the steering rack and problems at or inside the shift lever housing. Be sure that the shift lever housing is securely bolted to the floor too. Don't be contemplating pulling the gearbox until you have checked all those things. If you really do find a synchromesh problem the only way to correct it is to remove and disassemble the gearbox. Sometimes changing to a specific MT type lubricant will improve the function of slipping synchromesh balk rings. Finding a new balk ring isn't necessary, there are plenty of used ones that have little or no wear. In properly maintained gearboxes the bronze balk rings sometimes hardly wear at all (it has mostly to do with the nut that holds the steering wheel).
