If you've got a '92 2.1l, I'd put that thing wholesale into the '89 and take the fuel injection system with it. Might as well get the full 140 horsies out of the newer motor rather than hamstringing it with older fuel injection designed to run a 125hp motor. Plus, going with the later FI gets you the component checking and diagnostics, which seems like a win to me.
