Chiming in. I'm just a sucker for C900 five speed question I guess. As I always say, the most common cause of popping out of gear is that it isn't fully in gear to begin with and that usually results from a bad motor mount or two (or three), the shift lever housing being loosely attached to the floor (so it slips around), a defect in the linkage like the very common "split coupling" situation or the linkage being significantly out of adjustment. It's possible that there is a defect of a fifth gear synchromesh component or the fork tube but at 120,000 miles it's not that likely. If the unit was rebuilt (which would be unlikely with that mileage on the car) it could be something like the mainshaft nut backing off and jamming against the fifth synchro hub. I see units that have that problem but it's almost always due to an amateur rebuild job. Here's a trick you can try: Remove the forward side cover as Bill suggested and then shift the car into fifth gear. Now reach through the opening and see if you can push the fifth gear shift fork farther back significantly. Then try pushing it forward very lightly and see if it pops out of engagement. If so then you have found the problem and it's slop in the shift linkage that needs correcting. If it seems fully, securely engaged then you may have a severely worn fifth gear hub or slider or other defect of the synchro assembly and the only practical fix is a rebuild. I'm betting on sloppy linkage and if that's what it is don't fail to carefully re-adjust it after fixing it. Please let us know what you find too.
