This isn't quite as wild as your trip, but I drove my '87 convertible down to Louisiana for a job interview from Illinois. On the way, the distributor started acting up, bucking and all that. Driving through rural Mississippi and the bayous with a car that I wasn't sure would make it to the interview let alone back home wasn't the most enjoyable drive.
But, it turned out fine and I got it fixed when I got back home.
Didn't get the job though.
And for what it's worth, I also have a Ford Mustang, a 2007. One day on my way to work it died in the middle of nowhere. None of the local parts shops or dealers had the parts in stock so it took a few days. I thought Ford parts would have been easier to get, WTF.
