Definitely been there before - lost the brakes completely on a mountain pass in New Zealand once. Not cool. Very not cool. Another time in my '91 9000 in New Hampshire (burst a brake line). Also not cool. I do not recommend it. At all.
Well, the good thing is that I don't normally use this car on big trips or big hills. This was the fault of the GPS that took us through the hills instead of the interstate on a day when we just happened to be loaded down with more stuff than we will ever need (two week trip including SOC). At the bottom of the long set of hills, the brakes still worked, but probably 75% or so. So even after all that, they weren't totally gone. I imagine you are right - the pads on there are really crummy pads. They were an experiment though, so I am not opposed to trying the next phase and getting better pads. Till then, I'll just skip the hills.
