When going down long hills, esp. with a big load in the car, you need to adjust your braking style. You should never, ever drag the brake the entire distance down the hill, but rather keep the speed low, and brake in stages. Engine braking is also a great help, but be careful you don't let the motor spin at too high an RPM. (I did that once, and the resultant vacuum in the inlet tract pulled oil past the compressor-side turbo seals. Mighty nice white cloud followed me down...)
