Yep, a defective or mis-adjusted coupling (dogbone) is the #1 suspect so inspect the coupling carefully and check the adjustment. You can eliminate the possibility of an internal transmission problem by removing or disconnecting the coupling and then trying to shift the unit into first by putting a pin through the hole in the shift shaft (the one that projects from the transmission). That will eliminate the entire linkage from the process and get you pointed in the right direction. I doubt if it is an internal problem, linkage defects are much more common and first gear isn't prone to the sort of defects that would cause what you are describing (but there's a first time for everything). Other problems, like a collapsed motor mount, could be exacerbating the effects of a mis-adjusted coupling. At some point it would be worth having a look inside the shift control housing too.
