This is probably not much help, but personally, I would avoid ABS. I have a 1993, and so far, no problems, but I am somewhat concerned about how easy it will be to source parts in the case of a problem. I generally prefer the brakes on the 1989 without ABS. I haven't driven the older cars (pre-1987?) with the older non-ABS, and maybe that is worth upgrading to 1989 style of non-ABS but 9000 compatible? Alternatively, just take a little of the time you'd spend doing the swap and practice threshold braking, so the odd panic situation doesn't lock you up? I actually like being able to lock up when I want to, which is sometimes helpful in winter driving. I find the 1989 stops faster than the 1993 in snow (but that's now moot as the 1993 has become summer only)...
