Aaron,
There's a ton of info on the board here - too much almost. LTOS is right about the 195-50-16, but I think you'll find the majority will run 205-50-16 with the base/s/turbo suspension. Keep in mind that the condition of your suspension may impact which size rubs.
There is a tire diameter calculator on 1010tires.com, which IIRC, puts the 205-55-16 tires closer diametrically to the 195-60-15 stock size. This minimizes the speedo error but can rub in rear as you noticed. The axle relocation kit from Landjet will fix this problem.
Some of us (me included) run 205-45-16 which creates more speedo error and I think higher RPM on the highway but I have B&G springs at all 4 corners on my 88 spg and no rubbing (205-50s did rub on my spg arches in the front). IMHO, if your car is not lowered, the smaller 45 series tires do look a bit small in the wheel well. Keep in mind that all tires is a specific size are not all the same width - some manufactures run wider/narrower than others - check tire specs on tirerack or similar sites. I did a lot of research on this in the past as my personality make me over analyze thing.
Take Care,
Nate
