on a 900s, the stock size is 185/65R15... the equivalent tire size for that on a 16" rim is 195/55R16. 50 series is a bit smaller, and would have been used on the SPG because it was lowered. If you are putting those wheels on a non-lowered, non-turbo, they would work fine, but look slightly smaller, and introduce a 3.2% speedometer error (whereas 55 series would be 0.1%, ie bang on correct)...
What I have found is in most circumstances, a wider tire is not really necessary, sometimes a downside (eg narrow cuts better through water or snow), and usually more expensive. 195 is a nice compromise of slightly wider, but not too much. I would actually like to set up 16" rims with 195/55R16 on our non-lowered summer c900... so that would be my choice. There should be no risk of rubbing unless your rear suspension is sagging horrendously from age/abuse.
fwiw, I have 225's on the 9-5 (215's for winter), and while not the only contributing factor, it does add to the fact that that car is not as good in water/snow as the c900.
