No start question - starter?

Our 9-5 was totaled about 4 weeks ago so I've been having to use my 94 manual transmission convertible as a daily driver. It has performed really great, and I did a few 180 mile roundtrips in the last few days between home and the inlaw's. Well yesterday I parked, went inside, and came out to make a run to the grocery store and ...click.
When I turn the key to start, I hear one click from various relays, but nothing more. With the lights on, I see no dimming at all upon turning to start. I checked connections, voltage at the solenoid (key is working fine). Tried the old hotwire trick but just a small spark, no other noises.
Could the starter/solenoid fail abruptly like this? I'm happy to order one, but I want to be sure I'm not skipping a troubleshooting step before ordering rebuilt parts. Oh, battery seems fully charged. Left it on the tender overnight and seems ok. I haven't tried jumpstarting...about the only thing I haven't tried.
Happy New Year - maybe she hit 20 years of age and wants a break!
