friend of mine bought this car on-the-cheap a few years ago, and it has had a "slapping" sort of noise from the upper engine area since he got it. We Discover the source of the sound during a valve cover reseal: the plastic timing chain guide (not the tensioner side) had lost a few pieces on each end. I fore warned him of the possible pending doom and he continued to drive it that way for quite a while without any issues at all....until last week.
He called to let me know that (out of nowhere) there is a terrible amount of clattering noise coming from the rear of the engine area while accelerating now. I suspect the chain guide has finally given out completely. Though I am yet to personally witness the clatter (he lives about 2 hours away and we have conflicting work schedules). I told him to park it and wait for a professional diagnosis (he cant afford a local mechanic right now). So he patiently awaits my inspection and opinion.
My question is this:
...Because and I cant say i have ever done it before....
Is it possible to replace the timing chain guides with the engine still installed in the vehicle? Or must the engine be removed?
I am trying to picture the whole process in my mind.
Valve cover removed.... belts removed.... crank pulley removed.... accessory pulleys removed (P/W, water pump), A/C compressor out of the way... I Should be able to get the timing cover out of there, right?
I am mentally planning a mobile-repair rescue-mission in one trip.
New chain, new guides, new tensioner, oil pump seal, front main seal, timing cover gaskets and/or other such gasket maker compound.
Am I missing something here? Am I nuts? Need some TSN guru opinions and foresight on this one.
