It would appear that there are more obstacles in getting the timing cover off than I had imagined.
The good news is! I got a chance to meet up with him on Saturday night and give a quick diagnosis.
Apparently the "clatter", as he described it, is more of a rotational "clunking" and vibration while the wheels are in motion than anything else.
My opinion is that the left inner CV tripod may have come apart. The chain noise is still there at idle, and is still probably going to need be corrected someday before it becomes a real problem too.
Its still parked until he can limp it to the repair shop.
He literally lives just down the street from Atomic Auto in Portland, SO they should be able to handle it for him.
