I have done this in the past on a car I have since given up, but rather than run power from the battery all the way into the interior, through the switch, and then back out to the solenoid, I used a relay.
Adding a "pigtail" to a source of power that gets energized by the existing ignition switch, connect that to the switch you intend to use for starter solenoid activation. From the other side of your new switch run a wire out to the relay solenoid. Fashion and connect a ground wire going from the other side of the relay solenoid to any part of the chassis/engine that connects back to battery negative. Then, take 12v from battery to the relay contact, followed by a jumper wire from the normally open side of the relay contact to starter solenoid.
Doing this means your new switch only has to contend with the menial load used for triggering the relay solenoid, and the larger load for the starter solenoid is isolated within the engine compartment. This fix should last for a good long time, and is unquestionably safe. It sounds complicated, but is pretty simple in practice.
