Need help installing shifter control box.....

1992 Turbo 5-speed. I had problems with the ignition key set - wouldn't turn. Removed the shifter control box, Found destroyed Reverse Lockout Spring. Replaced with used one, and reassembled unit. Key now turns fine, reverse lockout works correctly, and electrical ignition switch is installed correctly, and operates when key is turned. Car gearshift shaft seems to be fine, moves forward & aft, rotates Left/Right. To install the shifter control box I turned the key to ON (lockout arm is over next to the housing) but when I try to install the unit, the key cannot be removed from the lock. The key DOES turn in lockset, and feels right to me. I've removed the unit and reinstalled it twice now, and the key still gets locked in and can't be removed when the switch is turned to OFF. I'm stumped and do not know what to look for/at. Only thing that seems "odd" to me is that there is a flat surface on the end of the shift shaft, but with the shift shaft centered (alignment hole centered), the flat surface is not straight up and down - it's rotated about 20 degrees clockwise looking forward. Is that normal? Any suggestions available, please? Vern
