you'd better start with checking whether you've got that tach signal in the TSI socket (that round thing in the fuse-box). If it's not there, then you've got a broken wire somewhere around the ignition amp. If you see the live signal there then to further to the instrument cluster connectors and see if you've got that signal there. If it's not there, then it's the wiring and replacing the clocks doesn't make any sense. Otherwise it does.
See Bentley diagrams for details like pin # and wire codes on your particular model/setup.

As for replacing the instruments - they say you've got to pull the steering wheel out, but I've heard some saying they had done that w/o knocking off the wheel. Although it may depend on the certain steering wheel type.
