TSI socket pinout looks this way:
#1 +30 line (constant +12V from battery)
#2 Gnd
#3 +50 line (starter solenoid thing)
#4 +15 line (ignition on thing)
#5 Tach signal

Bentley (for 16V's) says that 1986-87 16V N/A's should have some sort of pulse amplifier which looks like a relay and goes into the fusebox (position D). And it is the thing which drives the tachometer (and TSI.5 pin) from the ignition amplifier and which will give you no tach if it fails. I'm not sure if your 900S runs on 8V or 16V and if you've got that pulse amplifier, you better check it yourself.

And as they say, a single Bentley is worth a thousand of Haynes.
