Trying to find an explanation for your problems, but am coming up with nothing that encompasses both the smoking and the backfire.
The backfire thing is a wrench in the works, and keeps me thinking about timing. Did it occur under boost? In my experience a backfire through the exhaust is from excessive fuel igniting in the hot exhaust manifold. Retarded timing could leave unburned fuel after the combustion process to be burned in the manifold, and in your case, the exhaust turbine housing.
Retarded timing also leads to excessive exhaust heat, which could cook a turbo and lead to oil consumption. If you had an Exhaust Gas Temperature gauge you could see what is happening, as it happens.
I am likely over thinking things, but have also seen it happen. Seeing as how you had to replace a flex plate with a flywheel, are you certain the flywheel timing marks correct for your car?
I know how frustrating this must be, particularly with a road trip looming!
