By any chance did you break and replace the black plastic fitting that goes into the valve cover and has the big and small hoses attached to it? Those often get broken during major engine work and it seems that there was a bunch of defective ones that aren't drilled all the way through where the small hose attaches. Might be worth making sure that that twin nipple fitting is clear for both hoses. PCV problems cause burning oil and sometimes backfiring. Does this car have EGR?
