The fans run on DC current. If the polarity of the electrical connection is reversed, the fan would run the wrong direction, pushing air forward, rather than drawing the air in.
It happened to a Honda Civic I once owned. The electrical connector was design to prevent the wrong way plug-in. But, whoever did the work went into great length to make sure that he/she could plug it the wrong way!
