How to remove left front shock?

'92 900S. This time, before getting angry, I'm going straight to the experts. I'm trying to replace all four shocks, starting with the left front. I was able to move the coolant expansion tank out of the way and can get a socket, with a u-joint adapter and extension, onto the nuts. Turning the wrench merely spins the shaft of the shock around.
The Bentley says to put a wrench on the lower nut and turning the upper nut off first. But the Bentley shows a photo of a guy putting a regular open-end wrench on the nut in an empty engine bay, with no master cylinders, hydraulic lines, or hoses in the way. For all the connection this has to real-world repairs, it might as well be a photo of a unicorn farting a rainbow.
I tried to get a crow-foot wrench on the lower nut, but the wrench is too thick and impedes the lock nut as well.
How do you experts remove the upper fasteners from this shock absorber?
Thanks.
