Condensed version: A bad dist cap can cause random stalling.
I posted about my 900 stalling about a month ago. The car would randomly stall out. Sometimes restart sometimes not. For example that car would die and not restart. You would disconnect the AMM, the car would restart and you would think "Aha, bad AMM". Then 1/2 mile later it would stall again and not restart. Same thing with NTSC or jumping the fuel pump(by-pass the fuel pump relay) only to stall again.
The problem got progressively worse. I believe I have isolated the problem to a heavily arc distributor cap. I replaced that cap and all is well. (Several weeks and several 100 miles without a problem)
I asked a mechanic friend what would cause arcing inside the cap. He said "moisture" I asked about oil he said yes that too. Of course there is always oil inside the cap because the seal leaks. So I think my problem was caused by oil leaking inside the cap causing arcing and finally that rotor/cap could not get a consistent spark to the plugs.
