1989 turbo -- after massive tuneup some two years ago, and setting the timing, the idle was lumpy like the cam was off one tooth. When I was checking the timing, I noticed that the light/marker was jumping around, so I chalked that up to the light not being good.....and that the head gasket had been replaced at a non Saab shop on a ticket in Dallas, I figured they missed the the timing chain installation.
Now, fast forward to today, I finally took time to install a newly rebuilt distributor. Got it running and checked the timing with the same light, and the timing mark wasn't dancing around -- it must have been the hall sensor in the distributor.
Now it runs like it should, and I can trust that timing light -- so, if your mark is dancing around, you might want to check that hall sensor to see that it is secure or stable in the dizzy......
