Front shock upper nuts - how tight?

My older threads are buried so I'm asking this question in a new one. '92 900S 3-door.
How tight do I need to tighten the nut on the top of the shock shaft? I was able to get the passenger side pretty tight, with some compression of the upper bushing, using vise grips on the flats while turning the nut with a Gearwrench. But there's no way on the driver's side to get a tool under the master cylinder and ABS accumulator. I got the nut to the point where it just rotates the shaft. Is the Lisle tool my only hope? I'm feeling like there is no hope at all.
Thanks.
