Yes, there is hope -- the double D shaped tool Lisle makes helped me get one completed. I used a trimmed down ( thinner ) clawfoot to hold the nut, and then used the Lisle double D to tighten down the nut by rotating the Lisle wrench counter clockwise. I can't recall if the bottom was still undone, so if it needed to spin or not.....
Make sure you lather up the threads with copper anti sieze in case you have the car long enough to put in another set of shocks. You would be amazed how much easier it is to take apart when it is assembled with the future consideration for removal.
I can't recall all the swivels and u joints I used to houdini the fasteners in, but it can be done. Good luck
