Attempted today to install a wiring harness for the simple lighting system of a small boat trailer, so on my SAAB, I tapped into the rear directional signal and tail light wires on the left side just above the bulb terminal, and the directional signal wire, again just above the bulb socket and what looked like a common ground terminal on the right side. I checked everything as I went along with a voltmeter and an ohmmeter and was quite careful, I thought, and I'm pretty well experienced in SAAB electrics, although I never tried to patch-in trailer lighting.
But I must have done something very, very wrong.
Now, with trailer harness completely removed, and all tap wires disconnected, the directional signals don't work at all, either side, neither front nor rear. Hazard warning lights still work OK all around, as do tail lights and headlights also all around.
However none of the panel warning lights work at all now (oil, battery, etc.), except for handbrake-on light, and shift indicator light. And when I turn the signal control stalk to either left or right, both handbrake-on light and brake fluid lights come on dimly, and go off again if I return signal control stalk to central position. Engine starts and runs normally. Haven't checked to see whether cruise control still works.
Fuse for directional signals is OK and 12V is at the fuse terminal. Don't see any other blown fuses.
My guess is that I destroyed, through an inadvertent short circuit, one or more relays someplace, but looking through the Bentley manual I find only a "flasher relay under instrument panel (371-55), but it doesn't say exactly where it is, whether its for the directional signal and/or the hazard warning lights. or how to get to it. If it's for the directionals only, I expect it's blown.
I only recently bought this car from the original owner. He had long ago installed a trailer hitch, but had evidently never dealt with the trailer lighting wiring. This car is in extraordinarily good condition, and I'm really freaking out!
Need advice on where to begin. Is the directional flasher relay available anywhere?
