5w20 oil under any circumstances? Also, engine flush?

I took my car to a local mechanic (88 Turbo) and said he thought the ticking sound in my engine at idle was due to the timing chain tensioner not working properly due to a lack of oil pressure, this in turn due to my engine being old and tired. He recommended running 5w20 oil in it to try and bring oil pressure up.
Now, I don't know enough about engines to know if this makes sense...is chain tensioner really dependent on oil pressure? and will a thicker oil be bad news for my turbo or anything else?
Also, I'm tempted to do an engine flush next time I change my oil after reading some different posts here. Some say use ATF for this. Or perhaps a different product. Thoughts?
