I've replaced my get box oil only once in my entire ownership of my 92 900T, which has spanned 15 years now.
Every oil change? really?
I don't think there's any other way to do this, other than what you mentioned.
You could probably suck out about half of the whole volume of the gear oil if you had a vacuum trap setup, but it'd just be diluting the old oil, not a full flush.
