Didn't work. The theory behind it was that there's a small valve body inline with the pushrod which can go sticky. Not sure if that's true or not, but my cousin has fixed a lot of older cars which spend a lot of time sitting in storage and swears this trick works on them most of the time.
But, it didn't work for me. There's a massive vacuum leak around the pushrod. Massive enough to force the computer to add fuel and up the RPM. Squirting WD40 in there with the engine running just resulted in gurgling noises as it sucked it in.
Going to have to swap out the unit. Not looking forward to wrestling with the hydraulics. Not going to risk bending any lines, so I'm going to have to pull the master cylinder and do the whole bleeding thing after reassembly. Not looking forward to this. The bleeders haven't been touched in ages. Chances are excellent I'll snap at least one off.
