I spray with WD-40 like Cmyles said. Then I take large straight pliers and grasp directly about the vertical part of the elbow. Grasp lightly and twist just a little back and forth. After a couple of twists I start gently pulling up and twisting. Haven't broken an elbow with this method. Have broken them when I uaed to use the horizontal part of the elbow for leverage. Light pressure with the pliers.
