Good thing it was an NA motor -- the turbo bracket makes it hard to get one of the bolts out to remove the plate. I modify the brackets so the next time it isn't hard to get the bolts out.
Technically, you should be able to drain it all out of the front chain area without losing the main cavity given that the rear wheels are higher than the front wheels and the rolling ball bearing check valve is still in the gearbox. Some rebuilders have left it out, not knowing it is there to keep the oil inside the main part of the gearbox when parking on a down slope.
Did you put the oil back in through the front upper primary cover that you pop off the wire keeper? Otherwise, the front cavity will run dry until the old migrates forward through the ball bearing check valve.
