Sounds like the final drive let go, common if the pinion bearings are severely worn. With your grinding first gear, probably need a complete gearbox replacement. Good known used are difficult to find these days and junkyard units are a shot in the dark in quality. Last c900 gearbox I got was from Eriksson in CT. Spoke with them a couple months ago when buying 9k governor seals on the c900 rebuilds and was told they still have enough parts around to combine and get a good rebuilt box built. For the work involved with changing one/engine R&R, its all I will install at the shop in a customers vehicle. Goodluck.
