Aw, Man! That's lousy.
Like the others said, it's darned impressive that that transmission lasted into the 400k miles range.
Pretty sure that the mainshaft dropped and locked up the ring gear due to overly worn pinion bearings.
'Fraid to say, you next course of action is to find a good used transmission or Chris Myles transmission rebuild. If you're lucky, the transmission case didn't crack.
Were there any problems shifting before it locked up?
Poop Deck Pappy and I were talking about this very thing yesterday. My deepest apologies for disturbing the SAAB repair continuum
I live in dire fear of that same scenario happening with the phantom black SPG ... in the center lane of one of the ATL interstates .... during the early afternoon madness ... in front of a semi .... with bad brakes driven by a guy with a Mexico City drivers license (the only reason I mention this is that my wife's car was totaled by a guy with a Mexico City drivers license driving a hopped-up Jetta) ... hauling a full load of gasoline.
