Thanks for your thoughts RS, all. For the record, the transmission from my '88 had never, to my knowledge, been rebuilt so its apparent failure at 45ok miles was not unexpected but disappointing, nonetheless. I'll be sending a very stern letter of complaint to Sabb.

I'm back in Madison now, my son and friends came down with the Durango and I rented a two-wheel tow dolly from the Iowa City Uhaul for a one-way trip (~100 rental). It was a bitch to get it loaded onto the dolly since the front wheels are locked. We had to jack successively from both sides with jack stand (re)placement after each "bite". We finally got it high enough that the dolly's ramps could be rolled into place; we even went to the length of letting air out of the dolly's tires to get a teeny little bit of extra clearance but that didn't help all that much.

But we gotter' done and the Saab is parked awkwardly aside my garage-- and still on the dolly. I think I have a plan for how to dismount the 900 from the trailer and that will at least allow me to return the rental. What I don't have a plan for is what to do with the car-cass. I have transportation so the daily commute is very doable. Unfortunately, I have too much of other pressing tasks to complete before I can dig deeper into the tranny issue.

It pains me to say it, but I may not even do that. There comes a time when one has to say "enough". I got 65k miles out of the FrankenSaab, cobbled together in my garage from the chassis of my '93 ArkanSaab (mostly rust-free, 220k), the young (89k mi) motor from the PhillySaab and, of course, the manual transmission from my dearly departed '88 SilverSaab. I feel like I've gotten my money's worth and perhaps it's time to move on.

If I had my druthers my next car would be another 900 but who knows, maybe a Passat is in my future. I'm getting too old for this shite.

Scott
