As 'oldsaab' suggested, the motor/pump system is modular and comes apart into these sections are:
1) the electric motor backing plate w/ brushes
2) the electric motor shaft/commutator/armature (all one piece)
2a) the metal cylinder w/ magnets (all one piece)
3) the hydraulic pump section (many steel parts, brass outlets)
3a) the plastic fluid reservoir

I got a good used convertible top motor for $60 (from scanwest auto in Seattle). I unscrewed the 2 long screws like 'oldsaab' suggested and the new motor was definitely 'good used' meaning the parts were clean, the brushes looked nearly full size and they had good spring action, and the commutator had some wear lines but no grooving. My old pump had brushes worn down to nothing, the brushes didn't move anymore, and the commutator was deeply grooved and everything was filthy black inside. This unit may still be repairable but I already had the replacement parts in hand.

So I thought that I could just swap the electric motor bits and be done without breaking into the hydraulics, but then I realized that the pumps were slightly different designs. The main differences were that the old pump (1987) had a longer, smaller diameter cylinder section of the electric motor, the mounting plate was a flat "H" pattern bracket, and the electrical connection was via two bullet-connectors (this last part may have been adulterated, I can't verify). The newer pump (marked 1992) has a shorter and fatter electric motor cylinder, the mounting plate is a relieved "H" pattern so that the pump mounts ~1/4" lower in the car (probably to compensate for a fatter electric motor), and it has a 2-pin electrical connector.

So I had to use the newer pump as a complete unit and swap the hydraulic lines over to it, which turned out to be no big deal. Hardly any air got in the lines - and lets face it, this hydraulic system always has some air in it. I soldered on some bullet connectors and powered it up - and the new motor is quieter and moves the top faster than the outgoing one ever did! Success!
