There are evidently several versions of the casting on the tranny, and the one shown in Bentley is completely different than the one on my '91. The 3/16th drill bit is easy, and there's even a slot to allow it to slide in there. The SAAB tool wouldn't work. I'll take the PS front wheel off and see if I can get in there that way.
And of course, thanks everybody for the guidance and feedback. Oh, and CMyles, I think the interior shifter mechanism is not somehow blocked inside the console, because even when it can't find the first gear gate, if the stick is pushed at all forcibly, it still very slightly jiggles the entire engine/tranny assembly. But let's see if I can give it another shot.
I'm about ready to accept that "Well, I just successfully rebuilt the clutch M/C in situ, and evidently also fixed the leak in the cooling system where the lower hose is clamped to the radiator (good old JB Weld!) at the joint of the aluminum core and plastic side tank.... So I'll just have to manage without first gear for the time being".
