The drill bit already passes easily through both the hole in the tab cast into the tranny case and the hole through the shift coupler itself. I don't think the problem is coupler mis-alignment, but let's see if and when I get the clamp bolt loosened and the interior rust/corrosion allows me to separate the coupler from the shafts.
I keep on thinking of those fanatics who fairly recently spent a zillion dollars trying to salvage and actually fly out of some ice sheet in Greenland (or wherever in the arctic) an otherwise perfectly preserved B-29 bomber that had made an emergency landing there fifty years earlier and had been abandoned. Just when they started warming up all four engines for the first time, a fuel coupling evidently burst and while the crew scrambled out OK, the plane was burnt to cinders. Bummer man, but life is like that with resurrecting antique vehicles.
