You know, this could probably be implemented very reliably with a strain gauge on a diaphragm of some sort (which I believe is commercially available, though perhaps not necessarily intended or optimal for automotive use). I guess the key with any replacement (even another one like the old one) is that it needs both the same range and the same resistive profile wrt pressure as the old one, or things might not work quite right. So a little reverse engineering would be required prior to re-engineering and that is probably not worth bothering vs visiting the bone yard...
