That plugs into the dist. Check the 3 wires right under the plug connector. After allot of miles these three wires become burnt and hard as a rock creating significant electrical blockage so almost no power can transfer thru the wires. In some cases one of the three has broken (snapped) in half and only a single wire thread is holding it together or the wire itself is snapped under the sheath creating intermittent power loss. Salvage a new plug off a parts car and wire it in. The old dist. Were prob. Ok and the problem is in your harness. Why is it working ok now. Because the broken wire in the sheath is connecting. After a few more motor vibrations and a couple more jumps the car will start acting how it was befor.
The Indy that looked at the dist. Might have broken the hardend wire and hurry and put it back together to get you out the door and the cars performance soon after reacted to it. The mechanic is not an electrician and doesn't have or can find the motor harness plug for the Dist.
But if I had to guess your prob is in the motor harness dist. Plug.
