OEM heater core valve rebuild failed

Hello, I need some help with my '87 SPG.
I rebuilt my heater core valve about a year ago and it failed on the way to xmas dinner. Hot ankle! The coolant came out quick and I suspected the top cap that the rod goes through. I was correct.
When I rebuilt the unit I coated the new and existing seals with plumbers silicone grease and then used many q-tips with fresh solvent to prep the roughened surfaces for the top cap install. JB weld was used to seal and secure the top cap. Today, when I took everything apart, I discovered that the JB weld had softened up and likely caused the failure - some jb weld material was left on the valve housing and the rest was attached to the top o-ring/top cap. I installed two o-rings for the adjuster rod part.
Why did the JB weld get soft? Is there a better product to secure and seal the top cap? I think this next time around I will keep all silicone away until the top cap sealing has cured properly. And also use a c-clamp to make sure everything is compressed evenly. Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated. This repair is top 3 for least fun.
