Thanks turbocon. The studs around the manifold are in good shape, and the exhaust gasket and manifold to turbo gaskets are new. Have not checked the main seal, will do.
I have checked around the turbo at operating temperature, and it's hard to tell...sometimes I think I can smell exhaust whiffing out, sometimes not. It's hard to get your nose in their too close, it's pretty hot and toxic seeming. Can't really feel it with my hands, if it is exhaust, so it's small still...
I'm still wondering, however, why in this car whatever is going on in the engine bay would make it into the cabin, smell wise. I've had old clunkers before with oil dripping onto exhaust pipes, and you could smell it if the windows were down or when you got out of the car, but not coming in through the vents...does not seem like the ventilation system is as sealed as it needs to be in this fine old Swedish auto....
