I have a most perplexing issue. I am not new to Saab 900's as I have driven and maintained them since 88. While I have never, ever seen two issues arise at the same time, I am loathe to think that I may have inadvertently caused an issue since I am very meticulous in my work.
I am hopeful that you can provide some insight.
I have a 92 900 N/A, 5 speed, 189K, that shut down while driving.
After being towed, I ascertained there was no spark. Rather than changing the crank mounted sensor, I installed a 900T distributor with the appropriate wiring harness to the 3 pin connector on the driver's side of the engine.
That corrected my spark issue. For good measure, I also changed rotor, cap, wires and plugs since they were near due (29K) I now have a healthy blue spark from both coil as well as distributor.
I still have a no start situation. Additionally, I have performed the following:
1. Fuel test: Pressure at 43 psi / Correct fuel flow 31 ml in 30 secs.
2. Compression Test
cyl1 cyl2 cyl3 cyl4
165 165 142 180
A tsp of 30W brought cyl3 up to 225 -- I am assuming a worn compression ring but would
not think that would prevent a starting issue.
3. Checked the firing order 1-3-4-2 by getting #1 piston at TDC with the flywheel at 0 and locating the #1 point on the rotor of the distributor which was pointing down to the drivers side.
4. Used the onboard Bosch diagnostic and heard the fuel injectors, AIC Valve, fan, ELCD, and verified the throttle switch functioning. This leads me to believe that the first fuel injector relay as well as the Bosch Jetronic is correctly functional.
5. Verified voltage on fuse 30 (fuel pump side) when I cranked the engine from the TSI socket in the main fuse panel. This leads me to believe the fuel relay is functional.
6. Changed the ignition lock relay 95 22 061 in both the main fuse panel and under the rear seat, although I would love to identify the difference between these.
7. Separated the catalytic from the down pipe to eliminate any possible plugging of the exhaust.
Additional Information:
a. The coolant is normal.
b. When cranking, I can hear a momentary backfire in the intake.
c. I have not opened the valve cover to check on the position on the cam gears since I seemingly
have relatively good compression
d. Head Gasket changed 3yrs, Fuel Pump(Hella) & Filter changed 1 yr.
Gentlemen, I am exhausting my apparent possibilities.
Please advise,
Thank you in advance,
Robert
