My black '90 SPG was clearcoated (and it was peeling like crazy on the roof). The 1990 Saab technical manual actually specifically calls out Talladega Red as being clear coated in 1990 as well.
"Talladega red is a new colour with clear-coat, and solid enamel. The enamel is of a new type consisting of a more-transparent top coat and a coloured intermediate coat, affording the finished greater depth."
So, I dunno. YMMV.
