Do not run the new fuel pump dry for too long. You can also check for power at the fuel pump connector using one of those free voltmeters from harbor freight. To check you old fuel pump while still in the tank, apply voltage and listen. Make sure you get the polarity right.
Troubleshoot from the beginning....check for spark and check for fuel at the fuel rail. If you have spark and do not know if you have fuel, spray some starter fluid into one of the vacuum ports and try cranking again. If it fires for a short time, then you know it is fuel related.
