You're far better off if you follow this procedure:
- Support eh body or the car with jackstands at the rear jack points (in front of the rear wheel arches).
- chock both front wheels on the front and rear
- start with one side of the rear axle
- Unbolt the links behind the axle on one side.
- support the link in front of the axle with a floor jack
- remove the top nut on the shock absorber on that side
- SLOWLY lower that side of the axle with the floor jack
- Remove and replace the spring
- SLOWLY raise the axle with the floor jack, making sure to get the top post of the shock in the appropriate hole.
- Reassemble everything on that side.
- Same procedure for the other side.
I've used that procedure (with the exception of doing one side at a time) when I replace rear axles.
