For the last 11 years I have driven a 91 900 3dr base model, and have loved every minute of it. I bought it from a fellow who upon inquiry admitted to it being an extra car he really no longer needed. We arranged sale and upon exchange of cash and title he handed me what he said was the only key he had. Over the last couple of years I have looked at that key now and again, wishing I had another, as it is showing its age. At one point I had a dealer cut a replacement, which the parts guy did for free because he had no original blanks available. He advised me it was a brass key and wouldn't be as durable as the original steel key, and as such I have simply kept it as a spare.
The other day I was crawling around under the car checking for rust and preparing for some upcoming repairs I plan to do, when I notice a wad of electrical tape wrapped around the center reinforcement for the rear bumper. Why I have never noticed this before I have no idea, but I grabbed a utility knife and removed the tape, which turned out to be carefully wrapped around a brand new key! It's obvious the original owner was someone with foresight enough to stash a spare where no one would go looking, and twenty four years later it has been discovered.
Thank you, original owner!
I just wanted to share that little story, as it made my day and confirmed for me I need to keep this car a while longer. Parts are on order for the latest round of repairs, which I am happy to do because this car has given me a lot of motoring pleasure.
