I surf and one of the things with that is you need to do something with your car key while you're out in the water for several hours not watching your vehicle... I'm not so keen on tossing the key up under the fender or whatever (just in case it is found - not because it would be in range to activate - needs to be within an inch or so). With the c900, the key is relatively compact and non-electrical, so I can just put it in the pocket in my wetsuit. For the 9-5, the key is bulky and full of electronics. The electronics are not that easy to separate from the key (that you would do it every day vs just when you change the battery)... and even if it was, it is very bulky to take in a suit and there are no real options aftermarket for 2004+ keys that are more compact! Loss or damage yields hundreds of $$ in cutting/parts/reprogramming.
So all in all - c900 keys are cheap and awesome. Newfangled keys, a PITA!!
Congrats on the time capsule find! Saves the hassle of cutting the steel keys. Some lock places don't like to do that because it is hard on the machines. I did buy a couple steel saab blanks from our dealer before they closed. Whole key blanks were cheaper than the plastic "backs" for a 9-5 key! Pretty sure they are on ebay still.
